Hey all:
So I was trying to make an account on this web site and there's a captcha. There's an audio thing but when I try to click the link, it won't work. I can't have anyone help me because my laptop has a virus and that's the only computer we have. Does anyone know of anything I can do? Thanks in advance.
Anna

Aww, well no worries there. If you can instal firefox, then you can get web visum and this will allow you to over come captchas. Just download firefox and then look for web visum then when you are on a page with a captcha, press control alt f6 and web visum will read the captcha and you can then paste it to the form. I hope this helps a little eh?

I can't help you much at the moment, but hopefully i'll be getting my laptop on monday so I may be of more help then. If it's really urgent, send me a pm or email with the url and info to put on the site (i won't share it) and I may be able to create the account for you, though I can't promise.

I like WebVisum. Granted you now apparently need to be invited in order to sign up for the service but it's free and it's well worth it.

Something I should sign up for.

Yes,I love web visum. Also, there are times when web visum won't work. In that case, if I can find the graphic image and right click it, I copy it to my clipboard, then open Kurtzweil1000 and paste it in. most of the time, it can extract the letters from the image.

Slight correction to post 2, it's control alt 6, not control alt f6. There's also Salona, but I don't really know anything about it except it works with IE if you would rather use that than Firefox.

I haven't been able to get Webvisum to work for an age. I use Solona now. www.solona.net

As I offered on another board, feel free to send me a private message with an email address you don't mind me using, and I will send you an invite - if you want web Visum.
If not, get the latest Qwitter and they have Solona add-on.
Just remember that with Solona, never fill in the form with your personal information until after you do the captcha.
The best protection for your personal identity rests between your ears.

Also, I'd suggest getting some antivirus software. If you're computer's infected with something, it might be able to help you get rid of it. I've used Solona but didn't know it was only for IE. I've pretty much switched to FireFox now so will need to check out Webvisum. That's an extremely interesting note about Kurzweil. I had no idea that it could do that.

I heard that but laughed at the time but obviously it can do that.

My anti-virus software must suck. Lol :) do you have to install anything for solona?

No, you don't, but these guys are right, have it submit and solve the captcha before you fill out anything else on whatever page you're working on.

Actually, I installed the little program that comes with it. True, it's optional, but it's far easier than the manual way of doing it, which is outlines on the Solona page. As a small warning, I once was on a page that asked me to enter only the blue letters in the picture. Of course, the opperator had no way of knowing that, and I had no way of conveying the information, so I got all the letters sent to me and eventually had to ask for sighted assistance.

I just used solona for the first time and it worked great. I actually had an interesting problem caused by me. I uploaded the file too many times and did not see anything come back. I eventually got a message stating that aparently I was not getting the info and to leave feedback. I then did so but in the feedback asked if I could send one more time and did so. I did finally get the info and it worked so I left another feedback thanking the rep for there patients. I believe the feedback does send a message to them so it is possible to communicate in an odd sort of way. It's nice to have a service like that which will work on any browser. I use safari on the mac.

I didn't know that solona works with different browsers, let alone on the Mac. Can I use it with Safari? if not, how good is Web Visum?

Thanks all, I'm gonna see if it works on my BrailleNote. :D

Post 19 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Saturday, 06-Mar-2010 19:29:17

At this time, it doesn't look like Solona is compatible with Windows Mobile devices. I just took a somewhat-more-than-cursory lookthrough of their pages.
Since Qwitter apparently has an API bridge to Solona, it's not impossible your mobile vendor (Braille Note in this case) could do it. I don't know what it takes to take a standard Windows Mobile app and run it on Braille Notes - but seems it could be done at least for Windows cell phones / PAC Mate, and maybe even Symbian

Er, yeah, I'd get yourself antivirus software. Don't for goodness sake, go Norton, AVG or Mcafee. Mcafee's bloody useless and not particularly screenreader friendly, same goes for AVG and well, Norton's worse than Dell for dropping all this unnecessary crapola on your hard drive then leaving it behind there if you should wish to get shot of it one day. No. Download Avast, but be aware that with the latest version, you have to employ your JAWS cursor to navigate round it. I was fortunate enough, after googling around a bit, to find an old version 4 set up file. I forgot where I found that though, but I do have the new Avast 5 set up file on my external drive. Also, if you know you're virused, you already have a virus scanner installed but it proves ineffective in removing the infected files and other spyware which could be lurking, I'd install and run Combofix, from bleepingcomputer.com. Within half an hour, this lappy was as fast and squeaky clean as a new pin after I was unlucky enough to pick up a bloody trojan which messed a whole load of programs up including Internet Exploder, so I ran the Combofix utility to wipe it out. Back on topic then, once you've dealt with the virus, not before under any circumstances, install and run the latest Firefox 3.6 then create a Webvisum account. Webvisum's never failed me in solving any kapchers yet.

Jen.

Glad this topic came up so I don't have to make a new one.
I'm having a weird problem with Solona. Every time I log in to submit a Captcha it says the service isn't available. Is this just the new way of saying no operator's standing by, or is this a bigger problem? Thanks in advance.

Post 22 by CountrySinger (Account disabled) on Sunday, 21-Mar-2010 3:28:21

It's a fancy way of saying there are no operators standing bye. That's the one thing I don't like about solona. In terms of reliability, I think web visum with firefox is much better. The down side is that you have a limit of 20 captchas you can solve per day.

Post 23 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Tuesday, 23-Mar-2010 1:01:25

Wow, I didn't know that about Web Vissum. 20 captchas is still a lot, and most people will never need that many per day. I've been using it for about a year and have only run into trouble once or twice. When the server was down for a bit recently I did try Salona and didn't like it at all. I know that for security reasons you shouldn't type in your information before you submit the captcha, but it's still kind of creepy to me that people can see what websites you're on. Then there was the thing about no operators standing by. That's just annoying. Yeah, they're people too so it's understandable, but I'd rather have something I can be completely independent in using, and not whenever it's convenient for someone else to help me.
